Packed scrubbers consist of a vertical tower filled with packing material. This packing material provides a large surface area for gas-liquid contact.
A packed scrubber, often referred to simply as a packed scrubber or packed tower, is a type of air pollution control device used to remove pollutants from industrial exhaust gases. It operates on the principle of gas-liquid contact through a bed of packing material.

- Packed scrubbers consist of a vertical tower filled with packing material. This packing material provides a large surface area for gas-liquid contact.
- Polluted gas or air enters the bottom of the packed scrubber and rises through the packing material.
- A scrubbing liquid, usually water or a chemical solution, is introduced into the packed. The liquid is distributed over the packing material to create a thin film.
- As the gas rises through the packing material, it comes into contact with the scrubbing liquid film. This contact allows for the absorption or adsorption of pollutants into the liquid phase.
- At the top of the tower, a mist eliminator or demister is often used to separate liquid droplets from the cleaned gas stream before it exits the scrubber.
- The liquid containing captured pollutants collects at the bottom of the tower and is directed to a collection and treatment system.
