- Based on the pollutants to be treated, a suitable microbial species or consortium is selected. Different microorganisms have specific metabolic capabilities, and the choice depends on the pollutants and environmental conditions.
- The support medium is chosen to provide a surface for microbial attachment and growth. Common support media include organic materials, compost, wood chips, synthetic materials, or a combination of these. The choice depends on factors such as porosity, durability, and availability.
- The selected support medium undergoes preparation, which may involve sizing, cleaning, and other treatments to create an ideal environment for microbial growth and biofilm formation.
- The biofilter bed is constructed using the prepared support medium. This can be in the form of a bed, reactor, or filter structure depending on the application.
- The selected microbial species are introduced into the biofilter bed. Inoculation can be done by adding a liquid culture, spraying a microbial suspension, or incorporating a pre-colonized support medium.
- Monitoring systems, such as sensors for temperature, humidity, and pollutant concentrations, are installed to assess and control the biofilter’s performance.
- The biofilter system undergoes commissioning, during which operational parameters are fine-tuned. The system is then started up, and microbial activity is allowed to establish and grow.Periodic performance testing is conducted to ensure that the biofilter continues to meet specified treatment goals. This may involve assessing removal efficiencies and adjusting operational parameters accordingly.
